Canada’s Jennifer Jones and Brent Laing suffered their first loss at the Mixed Doubles World Curling Championships in Gangneung, South Korea on Sunday.
The duo lost 7:4 to Marie Kaldvee and Harri Lill from Estonia.
The Canadians held a 4-3 lead after the sixth end and gave up a deuce in the seventh. Jones trailed 4-5 with the hammer in game eight, Jones was easy with her last rock draw to the four-footer to level the game and Estonia stole two to bolster the win.
“It was disappointing, but we know what we’re capable of and we know there’s room for improvement,” Jones said. “We learned a lot about ice and rock and will try to get better as the week progresses.”
Canada enjoyed some early momentum with a two in the first end and a 3-1 lead after three games. However, that lead faded with singles in each of the next two, including a stolen one in the fifth from Estonia.
“They are a good team,” said Laing. “But we kind of controlled that game and we missed the bad one in the fifth and they got a steal that made it close. But that’s not the story of the game.
“All credit to them, they won but we kind of let it escape a little bit.”
Canada opened the round-robin game with back-to-back wins over Scotland and the Netherlands on Saturday.
The Canadians have another two-game day on Monday, taking on Italy in the morning draw and Australia in the evening draw.
