Canada won the Ice Hockey World Cup – Dagsavisen

by Horace Rogers

After 6.26 minutes of overtime, Canada and Nick Paul found themselves in the final arena in Riga. Then it became 3-2, and it became clear that Finland failed to repeat the feat of 2019 even though they led twice during the game.

Canada lost their first three group stage games and claimed their first victory against Norway. They advanced from the group stage as the fourth best team, and yet it was the team’s last game and 26th World Cup gold.

Finland got off to a dream start in the final when 32-year-old MIkael Rouhomaa scored 8.57 minutes into the first period. In the second period, Canada equalized after 4.30 minutes played by Max Comtois.

Drama

There was a tragedy when the Canadiens thought they had gone 2-1 at the end of the second period after Adam Henrique scored after a return from goalie Jussi Olkinuora.

Finnish coach Jukka Jalonen issued a so-called “coaching challenge” when he suspected that one of Canada’s players was in an offside position at the start of the attack.

And it turned out that the Finland coach was right, the video footage showed it was a player who had been offside. So there was no target for Canada.

Instead of 2-1 against Canada, it was the Finns who took the lead 2-1. Petteri Lindbohm scored 5.27 minutes after the start of the third period. Canada did not give up, and Adam Henrique, mentioned above, recovered when he tied at 2-2 after 12.37 minutes of the final period.

The United States won the bronze final

The United States took bronze after a strong 6-1 against Germany

Christian Wolanin gave the USA 1-0 in the 1st period, but it was in the middle of the period that the match was decided. Two quick goals from Conor Garland and Jack Drury gave it 3-0 before Jason Robertson went 4-0. Trevor Moore ended the period with a 5-0 lead.

The Germans got their consolation goal from Dominik Bittner in the third period before Ryan Donato scored 6-1 shortly after.

The United States came back from a 2-4 loss to Canada in the semi-final, while Germany had four hours less rest after losing 1-2 to Finland in the second semi-final of Saturday.
