The Canadian national team has won the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. On Saturday, Canada defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 in the gold medal game at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta.
The Canadian scorers were centers Liam Kilfoil of Quispamsis, New Brunswick and Caleb Desnoyers of Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. Kilfoil opened the scoring at 6:29 of the first period ahead of center Brady Martin of Elmira, Ontario and defenseman Cameron Reid of Aylmer, Ontario. Desnoyers then scored the game-winning goal ahead of center Cameron Schmidt of Prince George, British Columbia and center Emile Guite of Chambly, Quebec.
Kilfoil plays for the Halifax Mooseheads in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, while Desnoyers also plays for a Maritimes team in the QMJHL, as he plays for the Moncton Wildcats. Reid and Martin both play in the Ontario Hockey League. Reid plays for the Kitchener Rangers and Martin plays for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Schmidt plays in the Western Hockey League, specifically for the Vancouver Giants. Guite plays in the QMJHL with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.
Canada remained undefeated throughout the Hlinka Gretzky Cup. They remained undefeated in Group A with three wins and no losses. They beat Switzerland 10-0, Slovakia 5-1 and Sweden 2-1. In the semifinals, Canada beat the USA 5-1.
