OTTAWA, December 23. / TASS /. Another anti-record for the number of new cases of coronavirus infection per day was updated in Canada on Wednesday. According to the Ministry of Health, 14,934 cases of the disease have been recorded in the country in the past 24 hours. The previous record was set at 11,692 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.
The reason for this significant increase in the number of people infected was the rapid spread of the omicron strain of the coronavirus in Canada. The total number of infected Canadians now exceeds 84,500. Canadian regions on Wednesday reported 28 deaths associated with COVID-19.
In connection with the spread of the omicron strain, authorities in regions across Canada have seriously tightened quarantine restrictions. As a rule, they relate to a 50% reduction in the capacity of restaurants, gymnasiums, cultural and entertainment facilities and sports facilities. The most severe restrictions have so far been imposed in Quebec, where local authorities announced Monday that from December 20, schoolchildren will take the winter holidays in advance, which will last at least until January 10.
In addition, all officials who have this possibility are required to work from home. Catering establishments are only allowed to work until 10 p.m. All sports and other children’s sections are closed.
