by Naomi Parham

Canada announced this Wednesday, August 11 that the federal government will introduce vaccine passports for foreign travel this fall.

Passports will include information on the vaccines used, the date of inoculations and where the doses were received.

“For Canadians who decide to travel, the use of proof of vaccination will provide foreign border authorities with the vaccination history necessary to assess whether a traveler meets their public health requirements and provide reliable identification. and verifiable for his return to the country. Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino in a statement.

He also said that Canada is working with other countries to ensure that digital passports allow Canadians to enter their territory.

In a virtual discussion on Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Among the topics discussed was proof of vaccination passports, including the EU’s COVID-19 digital certificate.

The federal government must discuss passports with the country’s 10 provinces and three territories, since they keep vaccination records. Some provinces have made vaccine passport announcements within their borders.

For its part, the province of Alberta has said it will not introduce any passport system, according to the public broadcaster Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

There are already rules governing those entering Canada. Travelers must be vaccinated with a vaccine recognized in Canada at least 14 days before arrival. While the quarantine rule is no longer in effect, they should also have a quarantine plan in place just in case.
