The Canadian government explained in a statement that after the agreement between Meng and the US Department of Justice, it ended the extradition process of the Chinese executive, who was arrested in Canada on December 1, 2018, so that she can leave the country. .
“The judge released Meng Wanzhou from all his bail conditions. Meng Wanzhou is free to leave Canada, ”said the Canadian Department of Justice.
The statement came shortly after the United States informed Canada that it had withdrawn its extradition request against Meng. Justice Heather Holmes of the Supreme Court of the Canadian province of British Columbia then signed an order closing the case.
Canadian authorities have also used Meng’s release as an unfair criticism of the Chinese justice system, which earlier this year convicted two Canadian citizens, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, on espionage charges.
The two were arrested by Chinese authorities immediately after Meng’s arrest in Vancouver, which analysts interpreted as clear retaliation.
Spavor, a businessman specializing in trade with North Korea, was sentenced in August to 11 years in prison. Kovrig’s sentence has yet to be returned.
The Department of Justice noted that “Canada is a country where the law reigns.”
“Meng Wanzhou was entitled to a trial in court under Canadian law. This shows the independence of the Canadian judiciary,” the statement added.
Meng’s release now opens the door for China to hand Spavor and Kovrig back to Canada, although the deal between the Huawei executive and the United States does not mention the two Canadians.
