Team Canada is in the semifinals of the 2023 Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland. On Friday, Canada defeated Finland’s KalPa 6-3 in the second of two quarterfinal games.
Former Ottawa Senators center Chris DiDomenico of Woodbridge, Ont., led Team Canada with three points. He scored two goals and one assist and was the only Canadian player with a multi-point game. The other Canadian players to score were Jonathan Ang of Markham, Ontario, John Quenneville of Edmonton, Alberta, Jonathan Hazen of Val-Belair, Quebec and Guillaume Asselin of Quebec City, Quebec.
Team Canada will now face HC Dynamo Pardubice in the second semi-final on Saturday. HC Dynamo Pardubice, which plays in the Czech Extraliga in the Czech Republic, won the Torriani group after a 3-2 extra-time win over Switzerland’s HC Ambri-Piotta on Boxing Day and a 2-1 win over KalPa on December 28th.
In the other semi-final, the Swiss HC Davos and the Swede Frolunda HC meet. Both teams were part of Team Canada, with HC Davos defeating Frolunda HC 4-1 on December 27th. In the other quarterfinal on Friday, Frolunda HC defeated HC Ambri-Piotta 5-0. It should be noted that HC Ambri-Piotta was the defending champion, having beaten Czech Republic’s HC Sparta Praha 3-2 in the final last year.
