Team Canada is in the quarterfinals of the women’s beach volleyball at the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris. On Monday, the Canadian team with Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson defeated the USA in the round of 16 with 21:19 and 21:18.
Humana-Paredes led Canada with 19 points, while Wilkerson scored 17. Of Humana-Paredes’ 19 points, 15 came from attack and four were aces. Of Wilkerson’s 17 points, 11 came from attack, five were blocked shots and there was one ace.
There is no doubt that Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson did not perform as well as they had hoped in the round robin, finishing third in Group D with one win and two losses after losing to Esmee Bobner and Zoe Verge-Depre of Switzerland 21-18, 13-21, 15-11 on Wednesday and to Tina Laura Graudina and Anastasija Samoilova of Latvia 21-14, 2-20 on Friday.
However, the victory over the American duo Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth should give the Canadians a huge confidence boost for the future. Nuss and Kloth are ranked number two in the world and won the bronze medal at the 2023 Beach Volleyball World Championship in Tiaxcala, Mexico.
Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson will next face Spain in the quarterfinals (August 7, 9 a.m. MT). The other quarterfinals feature Switzerland vs. Australia, Switzerland vs. the United States, and Latvia vs. Brazil.
