Canada Post is honoring the long career of one of Canada’s best-known actors with a new collectible stamp.
The legacy of Donald Sutherland, described by Canada Post as one of the country’s “most respected and versatile actors,” spans more than 200 films and television shows spanning seven decades.
The stamp features a side profile of Sutherland and lists the titles of some of his iconic films in English and French, modeled on a film poster. It was designed by Quebec graphic design firm Paprika.
“Sutherland’s incredible talents and diverse tastes led him to take on a wide range of roles,” Canada Post said in a news release issued Thursday.
Early in his career, Sutherland, who was born July 17, 1935 in Saint John, NB, appeared in stage shows and on television. He made his feature film debut in 1963 as the character “Tall Man in Nightclub” in “The World Ten Times Over.”
His breakthrough came with the role of Vernon Pinkley in “The Dirty Dozen”.
However, his first leading role in a major film came in 1970 when he played Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce in “M*A*S*H,” which, according to the press release, “transformed him into a Hollywood star and…” one of the biggest movie stars in the world.
“With his international success, Sutherland has remained a proud Canadian and has starred in many Canadian productions,” the press release said.
These include “Bethune” and “Bethune: The Making of a Hero,” in which he plays the “legendary” Canadian Dr. Norman Bethune played.
Over the course of his long career, Sutherland received numerous awards, including an Emmy and two Golden Globes, and was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame.
