July 11, 2023 – Markham, Ont. –Canada remains standing by Hong Kong residents and supporting their freedom and democracy. Since 2021, Canada has opened its doors to Hong Kongers through dedicated immigration routes and continues to work to improve these routes and make it easier for them to stay in Canada long-term.

Today Paul Chiang, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Housing, Diversity and Inclusion (Diversity and Inclusion) and Member of Parliament for Markham-Unionville, on behalf of the Honorable Sean Fraser, Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the removal of the education requirement under of the Canada Work Experience Stream (Stream B) of Hong Kong permanent residency pathways will apply from 15 August 2023. This means more Hong Kongers with Canadian work experience will be eligible for permanent residency as they will no longer have restrictions based on their level of education. It also simplifies the application process, since applicants will no longer have to submit proof of education.

This change complements the recent extension and expansion of open work permits for Hong Kong residents and supports the transition from temporary to permanent residency for Hong Kong residents. By implementing these measures, Canada will be able to attract people who already have Canadian work experience. This will give Hong Kong professionals the opportunity to bring their unique skills and experience to Canada’s diverse workforce.
