Medical assisted dying (MAiD) is a complex and deeply personal issue for many Canadians. The Government of Canada is committed to supporting individuals who meet the eligibility criteria to have their MAiD application considered in a fair, secure and consistent manner, while supporting efforts to protect individuals who may be at risk, including those participating in a suffer from mental illness.
Today, the Honorable Mark Holland, Minister of Health, and the Honorable Ya’ara Saks, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Deputy Minister of Health, welcomed the release of the Canadian MAiD Curriculum developed by the Canadian Association of MAiD Assessors and Providers (CAMAP). This curriculum is the first nationally accredited, bilingual MAiD training program available to licensed physicians and nurses nationwide and will help achieve a safe and consistent approach to care.
Since its announcement in July 2022, this multi-year project has developed a series of training modules to advise and support clinicians in assessing individuals applying for MAiD, including those with mental health conditions, complex chronic illnesses or those affected by structural vulnerability as well as assistance with the practical application of the MAiD legal framework. It is delivered through a combination of online and in-person learning sessions for interested healthcare professionals, regardless of their level of experience.
This is another step in the work of all levels of government to prepare Canada’s healthcare system for the March 17, 2024 expiration of MAiD eligibility for people suffering solely from a mental illness. The Government of Canada will continue to work with provinces and territories (PTs) and healthcare partners to support MAiD practice in Canada, including careful consideration of requests, to ensure it operates in a consistent and safe manner across the country, while addressing PT disparities Health care taken into account.
