Canada is imposing sanctions on more Iranian officials to mark the anniversary of the death of a young woman that sparked global protests a year ago.
Six high-ranking regime officials are banned from entering Canada or owning interests in the country.
Saturday marks a year since 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in police custody after she was arrested for allegedly not wearing her hijab properly.
The new sanctions reflect Canada’s allies and include members of the Cultural Revolution Supreme Council, an unelected body that created the so-called moral police that enforces hijab rules.
Canada is imposing sanctions on Abdol Hossein Khosrow Panah, who took over the group in January and increased surveillance of women in Iran.
This is the 14th round of sanctions Canada has imposed on Iran in the last 11 months, targeting 31 companies and 129 individuals.
Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly noted that crackdowns against Iranian women have increased over the past year.
“Today’s sanctions reflect our unwavering commitment to stand with the Iranian people, especially women and girls, as they continue to courageously defend their human rights,” Joly wrote in a press release.
