Canada has enough vaccines to immunize all eligible Canadians

by Rex Daniel

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday that Canada now has 66 million coronavirus vaccines, enough to fully immunize its entire population.

“In the winter, I promised that we would have enough vaccines for all eligible Canadians by the end of September,” Trudeau said. “So not only did we keep that promise, but we did it two months ahead of schedule.”

The announcement comes as COVID-19 cases in Canada slow down and 10 provinces and three of their territories begin to gradually open since the closures.

The number of cases since the start of the pandemic in March 2020 stands at 1,434,909, with 26,512 deaths as of Tuesday, according to Johns Hopkins University, which maintains a cumulative total of cases and deaths worldwide.

The latest Government of Canada statistics from July 23 show that with a population of approximately 38 million, Canada administered at least one dose to 26,444,315 (79.66%) and two doses to 57.45 % of the population, which is equivalent to 19,074,058 people.

Canada has not approved the vaccine for children under 12.

As of July 26, there were 439 reported cases and six deaths.

Figures from CTV News differ slightly, with its vaccine tracker showing that 80% of the eligible population has a dose and 63% are fully vaccinated.

Statistics show that the vaccination program is working. For example, Canada had 2,787 new cases and 33 deaths on October 22, 2020, which represents a significant drop in the number.

Canada now leads the G7 countries with the highest percentage of its population fully vaccinated, CTV News reported on Tuesday.

The question now in Canada and in all countries is how long vaccines will work and whether a booster will be necessary.
