Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said his country faces a third wave of a very serious Covid-19 epidemic as the country’s most populous province grapples with a spike in infections and d hospitalizations due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus variant.
At a press conference in Ottawa, Trudeau warned that hospitalizations were on the rise, intensive care units were filling up and variants of the coronavirus were spreading.
“All over the world, countries are facing a very serious third wave of this pandemic and now Canada is experiencing it as well,” he said. Aljazeera.com, Wednesday (7/4/2021).
He added that even if the sun was shining and the weather warmed up, Covid-19 would not be over.
Canada has reported at least one million cases of Covid-19 and more than 23,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to a count from Johns Hopkins University.
The increase in cases and hospitalizations in several provinces, including the most populous Ontario and British Columbia on the west coast, has prompted calls for stricter public health measures to stem the spread of the virus.
Trudeau told reporters he plans to meet with Ontario Governor Doug Ford.
Ontario has seen a spike in Covid-19 infections in recent weeks and imposed limited lockdown measures over the weekend. Yesterday 3,065 new cases were reported, while the seven-day average of new infections reached 2,862 people.
The situation prompted the province to grant paid sick leave, as many professional workers during the pandemic were unable to take time off when ill, which advocates say has fueled the spread of the virus.
André Picard, health columnist at the newspaper Globe and Mail, said the latest modeling data estimates Ontario will register up to 6,000 new Covid-19 infections each day, up from 2,500 and 800 intensive care patients at the end of April.
