Canada eases travel restrictions but keeps border closed

by Rex Daniel

Canada announced on Monday that effective July 5, it will eliminate travel restrictions for fully vaccinated Canadians and permanent residents, but will maintain the country’s borders closed to all foreigners, even immunized, who do not arrive in the country for reasons deemed essential.

The measure announced by the Canadian government will allow fully vaccinated Canadians and permanent residents to avoid forced isolation for 14 days upon their return, as well as stay in a hotel for the first three days in the country.

Currently, Canada has closed its borders to travel considered non-essential and only allows entry to citizens or permanent residents, but they must stay in a hotel while tests are carried out to verify that ‘they don’t have covid-19, and later they have to self-isolate at home for 14 days.

Ottawa has indicated that it considers fully immunized people who have received the full schedule of a vaccine, or a combination of vaccines, accepted by the Government of Canada at least 14 days before arriving in the country.

Currently, Canada has authorized the use of Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen vaccines.

“This is the first phase of our cautious approach to relaxing Canada’s border measures. At the moment, we are no longer opening our borders ”, declared the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Dominic Leblanc, in a press release.

At the same time, the Minister of Public Safety, Bill Blair, recalled that “the Government of Canada continues to strongly advise Canadians to avoid any travel which is not considered essential”.

Despite the new measures, people returning to Canada, including those with immunity, will be required to show a negative COVID-19 test taken three days before arriving at the border and will be required to take an additional test when entering the country.

Canada has closed its land border with the United States since March 2020. Last week, Ottawa announced that it would maintain the closure until at least July 21, drawing criticism from American politicians as well as businesses. on both sides of the border. .
