The number of infections and deaths from covid-19 has dropped dramatically in Canada in recent weeks, as it is the industrialized country with the highest percentage of the population that has received at least one dose of vaccine against disease.
The country, which made the controversial decision to delay the second dose of covid-19 vaccine for up to 12 weeks to prioritize partial vaccination of the maximum population, has already inoculated 65.4% of the population with a dose of Canadians.
But at the same time, Canada is only the 81st country in the world as a percentage of the population fully immune, at 13.87%.
As of March of this year, Canada had vaccinated just under 4% of its population with a single dose of the vaccine and ranked last among industrialized countries.
Currently, the vaccination rate in the country stands at just under 400,000 daily doses, the highest figure among the G7 countries.
The vaccination effort, and to a lesser extent the restrictions, resulted in a 90% reduction in the number of daily COVID-19 infections. Yesterday, the country recorded less than 1,000 new infections when just two months ago, in the midst of the third wave of the pandemic, it reached a record high of more than 9,000 daily cases.
Tuesday’s 809 cases put the country under 1,000 new infections for the second day in a row. Since September 20, 2020, Canada has not experienced such a low number of infections.
The reduction in the number of infections also reduced hospital pressure. According to data as of Tuesday, approximately 1,493 Canadians are hospitalized in the country with COVID-19.
Also yesterday there were 30 new deaths in the country, bringing the total to 25,972 since the start of the pandemic.
The rapid improvement in the situation allows the Canadian authorities to speed up plans to reopen the economy.
Yesterday, representatives from Canada and the United States met to discuss reopening the border, which has remained closed to all travel considered non-essential since the start of the pandemic.
Last month, the Canadian and US governments agreed to extend travel restrictions until June 21, and the two countries are expected to extend the measure by at least another month, which could be the last.
