Canada continues to evacuate Afghans despite deadline

by Edwin Robertson

Canada has said it will save as many people as possible by asking for help.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, OTAWA – Canada will remain in Afghanistan despite the deadline set by the United States of August 31. Canada will be there if the situation permits.

“As much as possible, we will continue to work every day to evacuate as many people as possible with our allies,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday.

“The commitment of the other G7 countries is clear, we will all work together to save as many people as possible,” he said.

The remarks come despite US President Joe Biden’s refusal to keep US troops in the besieged area beyond the end of this month. America has by far the most military personnel in Afghanistan. While other countries depend on the American presence.

Since last week, chaos has erupted at Kabul airport as people rushed to flee Afghanistan. Several G7 countries, including France and Britain, are pushing the United States to extend the deadline due to the Taliban’s rapid progress in seizing power in the country.

However, the US president insisted on sticking to his deal with the Taliban that the US would be out of Afghanistan by August 31 at the latest. Trudeau said the Taliban takeover meant assessing Canadian aid to Afghanistan.

“With the Taliban controlling the country, our regular aid, investments and institutions must be reviewed to ensure that we are not supporting the Taliban.”

So far, thousands of people have been evacuated from Afghanistan. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey has transported around 550 Afghans since last week.

As of August 23, the United States has evacuated 48,000 people. “Canada airlifted 500 people on Monday,” said Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan.
