Team Canada continues their success at the 2023 Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships in Brampton, Ontario. On Monday at the CCA Center the Canadians defeated the USA 4-3 in a shootout, ending their Group A action. With that, Canada secured first place in Group A with a perfect record of four wins and zero losses. However, since Canada needed a shootout to beat the Americans, they had to settle for 11 points and did not reach the maximum number of points 12.
The Canadian team’s regular goals were scored by Canadian Olympic champions Sarah Fillier of Georgetown, Ontario, Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Quebec, and Laura Stacey of Mississauga, Ontario. Poulin had a multi-point game as she also contributed an assist for two points. Fillier, Poulin and Stacey won the gold medal for Canada Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. Poulin also won the gold medal for Canada Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. The shootout winner went to Canadian Olympic gold medalist Jamie Lee Rattray of Kanata, Ontario. Rattray, who scored in the ninth round of the shootout, won a gold medal at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
In the third period, Canada led 3-1 over the USA when the Americans scored a controversial goal with 39 seconds left in the third period. It seemed the Americans were clearly offside and Canada unsuccessfully contested the shot on goal. The Americans then equalized the game four seconds before the end of regulation time.
Surprisingly, Germany defeated Sweden 6-2 in Group B last Thursday. That means Canada will face Sweden in the quarterfinals this Thursday when Sweden defeats France on Tuesday. We know that the USA will play against Germany in another quarterfinal game.
