Team Canada won their final game of Group B of the Men’s Ice Hockey World Championship on Tuesday when they defeated the Czech Republic 3-1 in Riga, Latvia. With the win, Canada improved on their record of five wins, one regular loss and one overtime loss, for a total of 15 points. One of Canada’s victories came on penalties, allowing them to pick up just two points instead of three in their 2-1 win over Slovakia.
The 15 points means Canada finished second in Group B, four points behind Switzerland. Canada will now meet Finland in one of four quarter-finals on Thursday. In the other games, the USA will play against the Czech Republic, Sweden against Latvia and Switzerland against Germany.
In Canada’s win over the Czech Republic, Philadelphia Flyers center Scott Laughton of Oakville, Ontario, led Canada by two points by having two assists. The three Canadian scorers were Buffalo Sabers center Peyton Krebs and Vancouver Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers, both of Calgary, Alberta, and Arizona Coyotes right winger Lawson Crouse of London, Ontario.
Wednesday is a rest day at the 2023 International Ice Hockey Federation Men’s Ice Hockey World Championship. It will be a travel day for Team Canada as they travel from Latvia to Finland for the playoff round.
