The Canadian national team remains undefeated at the 2023 FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup. On Tuesday, Canada defeated Latvia 101-75, improving its record to three wins and zero losses. With the victory, Canada won Group H.
The Canadians were led offensively by Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Toronto, Ontario, with 27 points. Three other Canadians reached double figures. RJ Barrett, shooting guard for the New York Knicks of Toronto, scored 22 points, Kelly Olynyk, center for the Utah Jazz of Toronto, scored 15 points and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves of Toronto, scored 14 points. Forward Melvin Ejim of Toronto led Canada with seven rebounds and Gilgeous-Alexander led Canada with six assists.
Canada now advances to Group L alongside Latvia, Brazil and Spain. The preliminary round results will carry over into the second round. Canada and Spain have three wins and zero losses, while Latvia and Brazil have two wins and one loss. The top two teams in Group L advance to the quarterfinals. Canada’s next match is against Brazil in Jakarta on Friday.
Twelve other nations have reached the second round: Serbia, Dominican Republic, Italy, Puerto Rico, USA, Lithuania, Montenegro, Greece, Slovenia, Germany, Australia and Georgia.
