Canada beats Japan 5-0 in the Women’s Ice Hockey World Championship

Team Canada improved to a record three wins and zero losses at the 2023 Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships in Brampton, Ontario. Canada defeated Japan 5-0 on Saturday.

The Canadian team had to prevail against Canadian Olympic champion Emerance Maschmeyer from Bruderheim, Alberta. Maschmeyer parried 11 times for the shutout. She saved once in the first period, four times in the second period, and six times in the third period.

Leading offensively was Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sarah Fillier of Georgetown, Ontario, Canada with three points (two goals and one assist for three points). Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sarah Nurse, from Hamilton, Ontario, scored two points with one goal and one assist. The other goals came from Oakville, Ontario’s Brianne Jenner and Scarborough, Ontario’s Natalie Spooner. Two other Canadian Olympic champions had a game with multiple points: Erin Ambrose of Keswick, Ontario, and Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Quebec, each had two assists.

Poulin won a gold medal for Canada Vancouver 2010 Winter OlympicsThe 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochiand the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. Spooner and Jenner won a gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Fillier, Maschmeyer, Nurse and Ambrose won a gold medal for Canada at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. Canada next plays the United States on Monday.
