Canada beats France 2-1 in Olympic women’s football

With all the controversy surrounding the Olympic women’s soccer tournament for the Canadian national team, the fact that they won both games is significant. On Sunday, Canada stayed in the tournament with a 2-1 victory over host nation France.

The Canadian scorers were Canadian Olympic gold medalists Jessie Fleming of London, Ontario and Vanessa Gilles of Chateauguay, Quebec. Fleming scored the equalizer in the 58th minute and Gilles scored the game-winning goal in the 12th minute of second-half overtime. There was 15 minutes of overtime in the second half because French goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin had to leave the game with an eye injury and needed a while to get up and move.

Currently, Canada has a record of two wins and zero losses, with zero points because of Dronegate. Even more amazing is the fact that Canada can still win Group A. That would be the case if New Zealand beats France and Canada beats Colombia. The Canadians need to beat the Colombians to advance to the quarterfinals, but the fact that they can still win the group despite being stripped of six points by FIFA is downright hilarious. In other matches on Sunday, Colombia beat New Zealand 2-1, Australia beat Zambia 6-5, the USA beat Germany 4-1, Japan beat Brazil 2-1, and Spain beat Nigeria 1-0.
