August 1, 2023 – Ottawa –Canada’s Express Entry system is now tailored to provide a streamlined and efficient path for individuals with expertise in critical areas. By prioritizing the invitation of qualified newcomers with professional experience, Canada aims to meet the increasing need for talent and fill key positions that contribute to the country’s economic growth and progress.
On May 31, the Honorable Sean Fraser, former Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced changes to Express Entry through category-based selection. These changes help address labor shortages that support a specific economic goal by inviting candidates with specific work experience or French language skills to apply for permanent residency.
Today the Honorable Marc Miller, the new Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that the first round of trading for category-based selection will begin this week. This focus on candidates with skilled trades skills – including carpentry, plumbing and welding – will help Canada’s construction sector attract the skilled talent it needs across the country.
The category-based selection underscores Canada’s commitment to attract top talent from around the world and help meet the need for artisans to support the economy. These category-based selection rounds will continue throughout the year alongside the general invitational rounds. Further details will be announced in the coming weeks.
