Brandon Montour scores the first hat trick of his NHL career

Seattle Kraken defenseman Brandon Montour of Brantford, Ont., scored his first career National Hockey League hat trick on Tuesday. The hat trick was actually a natural hat trick and came in an 8-2 Kraken victory over the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Center in Montreal, Quebec.

Montour’s first goal came on the power play at 1:32 of the second period. Chandler Stephenson of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Oliver Bjorkstrand picked up the assists. At that point, the Kraken took a 5-1 lead. Montour then scored the only other goal at midfield at 8:44 of the second period on an all-Canadian goal by defenseman Jamie Oleksiak of Toronto, Ontario, and center Jaden Schwartz of Wilcox, Saskatchewan. Seattle took a 6-1 lead at the time. Montour then scored a hat trick on an all-Canadian power-play goal from Stephenson and Jared McCann of Stratford, Ont., to give the Kraken a 7-1 lead.

Montour was one of four Canadiens to score against the Canadiens. The other three were Oleksiak, Schwartz and Ryker Evans from Calgary, Alberta. In total, five Canadians had a multi-point game for Seattle. Montour and Stephenson each had four points. Montour had three goals and one assist, and Stephenson had four assists. Schwartz had a goal and two assists for three points, Oleksiak had a goal and an assist for two points and McCann had two assists.

In the 2024–25 season, Montour recorded four goals and five assists for nine points in ten games. He is a +3 with 10 penalty minutes, three power play points, 33 shots on goal, 11 blocked shots, 19 hits, three takeaways and 14 giveaways.

This is the third time in the history of the Kraken franchise that there has been a hat trick. Captain Jordan Eberle of Regina, Saskatchewan, scored three goals in the Kraken’s 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabers on November 4, 2021 and McCann scored three goals in the Seattle Seahawks’ 8-5 win over the Chicago on January 14, 2023 Blackhawks. Montour is the first defender this season and the first defender in Kraken history to score a hat trick.

With the win, the Kraken improve to a record of five wins, four losses and one overtime loss, a combined 11 points. They are in fifth place in the Pacific Division.
