Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar has been repeatedly criticized and trolled for having a Canadian passport. The actor had earlier clarified that despite having a Canadian passport, he pays his taxes in India.
And now at an event, the Ram Setu actor said that having a Canadian passport doesn’t mean he is any less of an Indian. The actor revealed that it has been nine years since he got his passport, adding, “And I don’t want to go into the reason why my films didn’t work, blah, blah, blah,” Kumar said.
According to a report in ETimes, Akshay Kumar had earlier revealed that he got his Canadian citizenship at a point in his career when his films were not working. The actor thought about moving to Canada and made the decision when one of his Canadian friends suggested him to move if he didn’t succeed in India.
Akshay had thought about an exodus, but soon after getting citizenship from the country, his films started working again and the actor decided to stay back.
However, this is not the first time the actor has spoken openly about his Canadian citizenship. Back in 2019, Akshay had tweeted that he did not understand the unwarranted interest and negativity towards his citizenship.
The actor had tweeted that he has never hidden or denied that he holds a Canadian passport, but added that it is equally true that he has not visited Canada in seven years.
“I work in India and pay all my taxes in India,” the actor had written, adding that in all these years he never had to prove his love for India.
“I find it disappointing that my citizenship issue is constantly being dragged into unnecessary controversy, a matter that is personal, legal, non-political and of no importance to others. I want to continue to contribute in my small way to the causes I strive for “Believe in India and make it stronger and stronger,” the actor had concluded his post.
