Given the concerns over his health over the last season, it’s hard to blame fans for thinking that Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews has reached the end of his National Hockey League career. Toews’ retirement may be premature.
Toews is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, and with the Blackhawks undergoing a complete rebuild, it seems unlikely he’ll factor in their future plans. Interestingly, however, there is talk of Toews returning to his native Canada for one final start at the Stanley Cup north of the border.
There is talk in Edmonton of 4C’s Jonathan Toews edging out newly signed Derek Ryan to a preferred spot on the right wing. Toews is at a crossroads, he’s done with the Blackhawks but reportedly unsure of what’s next.
Considering important factors such as Toews’ declining performance and ongoing health concerns, it would have to be a short-term deal close to the league minimum wage for the Oilers to even consider such a move. That being said, the inclusion of Toews would bring a multiple Stanley Cup winner into the Oilers’ locker room and also give them a ton of fourth-row experience.
However, the Oilers have a connection to Toews with former Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith on the team, so keep an eye out for this potential Oilers move.
