“The repressive actions and persecution of the Ortega administration and those who supported it prompted the United States to act,” Biden said in the quoted executive order. Reuters.
By decree, Biden banned all Nicaraguan “elected officials” from entering the United States, including Ortega’s wife who became vice president, Rosario Murillo.
In addition, the United States has also banned entry to members of the security forces, judges, mayors and other officials believed to have tarnished democracy in the Central American country.
“[Mereka] harass people to perpetuate the authoritarian agenda of the Ortega government, ”Biden wrote in his executive order.
Biden issued the executive order a day after the US, UK and Canada imposed sanctions on a number of Nicaraguan officials in response to the country’s Nov. 7 general election which was deemed fraudulent.
In that election, Ortega was re-elected president for the fourth time, after various attempts to bring down his rivals, ranging from imprisoning political enemies to mitigating criticism on social media.
Not only the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, the member states of the Organization of American States (OAS) also passed a resolution declaring that the Nicaraguan elections were not “legitimized democratic”.
Of the OAS membership, 25 countries supported the resolution, while seven others, including Mexico, Honduras and Bolivia, abstained.
This is not the first time that the United States has imposed sanctions on Nicaragua. Previously, Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump, had also imposed various sanctions, such as asset freezes and travel bans on some Nicaraguan officials.
Ortega has always viewed American supporters as “Yankee imperialists” and accused them of abusing Nicaragua’s electoral process. In the midst of this chaos, a number of countries, such as Cuba, Venezuela and Russia, have supported Ortega.
