Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario, reached the final of the Rosmalen Open on Sunday. It was her first Women’s Tennis Association final in two years and her seventh WTA final of her career. Andreescu ultimately lost 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to second-seeded Liudmila Samsonova of Russia.
Andreescu reached the final after defeating Hungarian Dalma Galfi 6-4, 6-2 in Saturday’s semifinals, which was considered a minor surprise. Galfi is ranked 120th in the world and Andreescu is ranked 163rd.
In the semifinals, Andreescu had the edge when it came to returning, managing to save Galfi from four break points on five occasions, while Galfi had four break points of her own, but Andreescu only had one.
Andreescu’s three WTA titles came in a magical 2019 season that earned her the Northern Star Award and the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award. That year, she won Indian Wells, the Canadian Open in Toronto and the United States Open. When Andreescu defeated Serena Williams of the United States 6-3, 7-5 in the final at Flushing Meadows, New York, she made Canadian tennis history as the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title. Andreescu’s other Grand Slam finals came at the 2019 Auckland Open in New Zealand, the 2021 Miami Open and the 2022 Bad Homburg Open in Germany.
