Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario, is in the third round of Wimbledon. On Wednesday, Andreescu defeated Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 7-6 in the second round. Noskova was the second player Andreescu has beaten at Wimbledon as a lower seed. Andreescu, seeded 176th, defeated 62nd seed Jacqueline Cristian of Romania 6-4, 6-2 in the first round on Monday.
Andreescu, the 2019 United States Open champion, won 90% of her first serve points against Cristian. The most important statistic in Andreescu’s victory over Noskova was the fact that Andreescu made only 11 unforced errors while Noskova had 26.
Andreescu is one of two unseeded Canadians to have knocked out a seeded player so far. The other is Dennis Shapovalov of Toronto, Ontario. In the first round on Monday, Shapovalov eliminated 19th-seeded Chilean Nicolas Jarry 6-1, 7-5, 6-4. Shapovalov, the 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist, never broke. He broke Jarry four times. Meanwhile, Shapovalov had nine aces while Jarry had just five. The other key statistic in Shapovalov’s victory was the percentage of second serves won. Shapovalov was at 85% and Jarry at 53%.
Andreescu will next face seventh-seeded Jasmine Paolini of Italy, who reached the final of the 2024 French Open. Paolini defeated Andreescu 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 in the third round of the French Open earlier this year. Shapovalov will next face Daniel Altmaier of Germany. Altmaier is ranked 80th in the world and Shapovalov is 121st. This will be their first head-to-head meeting.
Meanwhile, Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, Quebec, is still in the women’s singles at Wimbledon. The 30th seed defeated Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti 6-4, 6-3 in the first round and will next play Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the second round. Fernandez reached the final of the US Open in 2021, while Wozniacki won the Australian Open in 2018.
