Toronto Maple Leafs left winger Tyler Bertuzzi of Sudbury, Ont., recorded his third career National Hockey League hat trick on Saturday. He achieved this feat with the Maple Leafs’ 4-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado.
After the Avalanche took a 2-0 lead, Bertuzzi gave the Maple Leafs the lead at 13:42 of the first period on the power play through Mitch Marner of Markham, Ont., and William Nylander. Bertuzzi then tied the game at 2:45 p.m. of the second period through Max Domi of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Nylander and then scored the game-winning goal with two minutes and 51 seconds left in the third period through Matthews and Nylander.
Bertuzzi was one of two Canadians to record a multi-point game for the Maple Leafs. The other was Marner, who scored two points with a goal and an assist.
In the 2023-24 season, Bertuzzi scored 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points. With 28 penalty minutes, six power play points, one game-winning goal, 110 shots on goal, four faceoff wins, 35 blocked shots, 64 hits, 29 takeaways and 30 giveaways, he is a zero rating.
Bertuzzi’s first NHL hat trick came on January 12, 2019 in the Detroit Red Wings’ 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild. Bertuzzi’s second NHL hat trick came on October 14, 2021 in a 7-6 Red Wings loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
With the win, the Maple Leafs have now won seven games in a row. They have a record of 33 wins, 16 regulation losses and eight overtime losses (74 points) and are in third place in the Atlantic Division.
