Cities in Ontario occupied the majority of the top ten places in the Safety Index. Barrie took first place with an overall rating of 7.13 out of 10.

Toronto finished fourth with a score of 6.63, behind Brantford and Guelph. The only two cities in the top ten that are outside of Ontario are Saint John, New Brunswick, and Lethbridge, Alberta.

Although Lethbridge is in the top 10, Rentola noted that the southern Alberta city has the highest crime rate in the entire country. The website noted that cumulative data suggests that the majority of crimes committed are classified as non-violent. Adding a high number of police officers contributes to a high crime detection rate.

Winnipeg, Kelowna and Thunder Bay occupied the bottom three spots on Rentola’s list. All three were listed with an overall safety index of under 5 out of 10.

Canada’s major cities – Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton – ranked 12th, 18th, 20th and 21st respectively.

Toronto was the city with the sixth-highest rate of violent crime while second for nonviolent crime.

Montreal came in 15th for violent crime, Vancouver 13th, Calgary 17th, Edmonton 27th, and Winnipeg second to bottom.

As for nonviolent crime, Montreal ranked 27th, Vancouver 8th, Calgary 17th, Edmonton 7th, and Winnipeg 6th.
