It’s been a busy – and successful – season for members of the White Rock Lawn Bowling Club.
That year the club had seven medalists at the British Columbia Provincial Championships held in June and July.
As medalists for BC, they now compete with bowlers from other provinces at the Canadian Championships, noted Yvette Symes, who works with the club’s members.
She also pointed out that the entire province of BC is represented at the Canadian National Championships by 36 bowlers, seven of whom are affiliated with the White Rock Club.
“It’s been a great season!” Symes said, noting that her club has players of all levels, from social bowlers to competitive players.
“We are very proud of our competing bowlers and wish them ‘Happy Bowling’.”
National championship games have been held at several different locations in Canada, but this year BC is hosting much of the competition at the Juan de Fuca Lawn Bowling Club.
Currently, several White Rock players are competing in Juan de Fuca this week (21-25 August), while one of their most recent members, Auzzie Chambers (22), has already won national silver in the U25 category previously held at Regina .
“He did well and took the silver with the Canadians,” Symes said.
There are different categories of competition, she explained, with some going as far as Nova Scotia (mixed pairs) and Alberta (senior threesomes).
It’s also been a busier season for new members at the club, with between 40 and 45 new members, and interest in the sport persists throughout the season, which is almost never the case, Symes noted.
“That’s a lot more than usual – this year was quite extraordinary,” she said.
At White Rock Club, they encourage people to come for a tour and bowling first before joining, she explained. “You have to do a coaching before you can get involved – that’s our policy – so we give (interested potential players) a tour of the facility and then we let them roll a few bowls and see if they want to do that.”
Players continue to compete in national competitions at the Victoria Club until August 26.
