Tennis News: Denis Shapovalov tested positive for Covid-19 after arriving in Sydney to compete with Canada in the ATP Cup.
Denis Shapovalov was one of the first players to arrive in Australia and is part of the Canadian squad that will compete in the ATP Cup in Sydney from January 1-9, ahead of the Australian Open in Melbourne which kicks off on January 17. .
Before arriving in Australia, Shapovalov played in the tennis world championship in Mubadala, Abu Dhabi last week, where he beat Rafael Nadal in a third place match. Nadal tested positive for Covid-19 upon his return to Spain after participating in the tournament.
Via his Twitter account, Shapovalov announced that he had confirmed Covid-19 upon his arrival in Sydney but he presented only mild symptoms.
“Hello everyone, I just wanted to let you know that upon my arrival in Sydney I tested positive for Covid. I am following all protocols including isolation and I am informing those who have been in contact with me. I am currently experiencing mild symptoms and hope to return to the field when it is virus free. Thank you in advance for your support and hope you are all safe, “Shapovalov wrote.
Under these conditions, Shapovalov will not play in the ATP Cup, or at least at the start of the tournament, since he will have to undergo a minimum of 10 days of isolation. Canada’s first game is scheduled for Sunday (2/1) against the United States.
