The first flight of Afghans assisting the Canadian military in Afghanistan landed in the country on Wednesday.
According to the government, it was the first of a number of flights scheduled for the coming weeks.
The arrival of the migrants shows that Canada is fulfilling its obligation to help Afghanistan amid the Taliban’s efforts to regain control of the country.
“We are committed to supporting Afghans who participate in Canada’s mission while in Afghanistan,” said the Canadian Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC).
Migrants have assisted the Canadian military for the past 10 years, notably as interpreters and cooks. Their families will also come to Canada.
“The government’s priority is to resettle Afghan nationals who are at great risk to support Canadian work in Afghanistan,” the IRCC statement said.
“We have worked tirelessly to identify eligible people to come to Canada under this special immigration program,” the ministry said.
The Canadian government said the migrants and their families had undergone a security check, tested for Covid-19 and would soon be quarantined.
“To help Afghans adjust to life in Canada, community service organizations across Canada are preparing to welcome them,” the statement said.
“Settlement organizations will help them find permanent residency, language training, jobs and connections with established immigrants and Canadians, and provide them with the information they need about life in Canada. “
