Arrival of the first batch of Afghan refugees in Canada

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, OTTAWA – The first batch Afghan refugees to arrive at Canada Wednesday (4/8). Previously, they worked to assist Canadian troops serving in Afghanistan.

The Canadian government said the refugees had undergone a security check and had been tested for Covid-19. After that, they will undergo a period of quarantine. Canadian authorities have not disclosed where the refugees will be resettled for security reasons.

“A settlement agency will help them find permanent residence, language training, employment and connections with established immigrants and Canadians and provide them with the information they need about life in Canada,” said the IRCC.

The IRCC said there would be several other flights to transport Afghans who had worked for the Canadian military. “With the arrival of the first Afghan refugees resettled in Canada, we are keeping this promise,” said IRCC.

Afghanistan returned to turmoil after the United States (US) and its NATO allies decided to withdraw their troops from the country. The Taliban immediately launched attacks to capture and control a number of areas there. So far, the United States has been the Afghan government’s main ally in the fight against the Taliban.
