Andreescu books quarter-final with top-seeded Kasatkina at Bad Homburg Open

Canada’s Bianca Andreescu beat Britain’s Katie Swan 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday at the Bad Homburg Open lawn tennis tournament.

Andreescu, of Mississauga, Ont., needed an hour 37 minutes to claim the second-round victory.

She will then face top-seeded Russian Daria Kasatkina in the quarter-finals. Kasatkina, the world number 13, beat Germany’s Jule Niemeier 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

Andreescu, 64th, is yet to drop a set in the Wimbledon warm-up.

The 2019 US Open champion opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Italy’s Martina Trevisan.

Shapovalov’s slippage continues

Meanwhile, Canadian Denis Shapovalov’s losing streak continued as he lost a 6-4, 6-1 decision to France’s Benjamin Bonzi at the Mallorca Championships.

It was the opener for the 16th-ranked Canadian, who had been byeed in the first round during the Wimbledon warm-up.

Shapovalov has lost openings in five consecutive tournaments (Mallorca, London, Stuttgart, Paris and Geneva).

Bonzi, the world No. 56, needed just 67 minutes to complete the win. Shapovalov, of Richmond Hill, Ont., committed six double faults and committed 19 unforced errors to only six for his opponent.

Shapovalov’s last victory was almost six weeks ago when he beat Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the round of 16 at the Rome Masters.
