The US Department of Security (DHS) on Sunday announced the extension of its non-essential travel restrictions for land crossings between Canada and Mexico.
“To reduce the spread of # COVID19, the United States is extending restrictions on non-essential travel to our land and ferry crossings with Canada and Mexico until July 21, while ensuring access for trade and essential travel, ”DHS wrote on its Twitter account.
Although the restrictions were due to end, the measure was taken following a slight increase in infections in Mexico, which has confirmed more than 4,200 cases in recent days.
Mexico has so far recorded 2.47 million infections, while deaths have exceeded 231,000.
For their part, Canadian authorities have indicated that most borders will remain closed until 75% of Canadians have received the first dose and 20% are fully immunized.
However, the department added that it “observes positive developments in recent weeks and is participating with other U.S. agencies in White House expert working groups with Canada and Mexico to identify the conditions under which the restrictions can be relaxed in a safe and durable way. ”.
With more than 34 million infections and 617,000 deaths, the United States leads the world in the number of people affected by the coronavirus.
