Alex Munter resigns as CHEO President

by Naomi Parham

After more than a decade leading the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Alex Munter is leaving CHEO to become the next CEO of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).

In a letter distributed by the hospital’s board of directors on Thursday, Munter said he was stepping down with “mixed emotions” after 13 years as CHEO’s president and CEO.

“I will continue to work closely with pediatricians, CHEO and many other health organizations. And of course, I am the father of a six-year-old,” Munter wrote.

“Like all other parents and carers in our region, I am very committed to the success of CHEO. I will always support CHEO.”

With over 68,000 physicians and physician assistants as members, the CMA is the largest medical advocacy organization in Canada.

As the new CEO, Munter will bring extensive experience in the healthcare sector as well as “bold and inclusive leadership,” CMA Board Chair Dr. Suzanne Strasberg said in her own statement.

“His decades of experience in health care advocacy and his commitment to inclusivity and collaboration will strengthen the momentum the CMA has built to improve health and health care,” Strasberg said.

Munter will serve in his current role at CHEO until October 2024. The hospital said he was not available for interviews on Thursday.
