Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
canadian musician, Justin bieber, immediately ran into copyright issues shortly after the release of his latest album, Justice.
The issue stems from a lawsuit brought by French electronic duo, Grammy Award-winning Justice, who accused the words “Justice” on the cover of Bieber’s new album of imitating their band’s emblem.
They base their argument on the shape of the letter “t” in Justice which is both converted to a cross. Justice’s legal team also sent an official letter to Bieber.
“Use of the mark is illegal. You do not have permission from Justice to use the mark. In addition, Bieber’s work is also not associated, endorsed or sponsored by Justice,” said the letter from Justice’s legal team seen by Rolling Stone.
The statement continued, “The use of the symbol is not only illegal, it can confuse customers as well.”
Justice manager Tyler Goldberg himself admitted to receiving numerous messages from fans bewildered by the symbol on Bieber’s album cover.
“Justice received a lot of messages questioning the similarity of Justin Bieber’s Justice album. They were confused [dan berpikir]“Is it a collaboration with justice? Goldberg said, quoted by The Guardian.
Bieber’s management team claim that the logo design does not infringe the copyright of Justice’s Cross.
However, Justice claims that Bieber’s management team actually contacted them in April 2020 to inquire about their logo maker. But then Bieber’s management team gave up on communication.
