However, the plan provides few details on the investment and construction pace required to achieve this goal.
Prime Minister Danielle Smith said the plan confirms that responsibly produced oil and gas will continue to be a fundamental part of the global energy mix for decades to come.
“Our Made in Alberta plan to reduce emissions while boosting the economy is a plan that works for Albertans. This can never be a one-size-fits-all model passed on by the federal government. I’m so proud of the work that has been done to bring this forward,” said Smith. “Alberta can and will be part of the solution to ensure North American and global energy security. We can make real strides in protecting the environment without sacrificing the economic engine of Alberta and Canada.”
The plan also promises to consider a lower greenhouse gas cap from the oil sands and stricter fuel emissions standards.
The standards for methane emissions are also becoming stricter, and the effects on the climate are also to be taken into account in provincial land use decisions.
The ERED plan also aims to modernize the power system and integrate new technologies.
The province has set a net-zero target for the first time, according to Alberta environmental officials.
