Ahead of the election, politics in Canada heat up

by Edie Jenkins
Ottawa: Tensions in Canada are mounting four days before parliamentary elections. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called on citizens to vote objectively.

Trudeau made the call because he could potentially lose to rookie leader Tory Erin O’Toole.

According to opinion polls, the two major parties that govern Canada are in a difficult situation. Each garnered the support of 32% of respondents, while the left-wing New Democratic Party lags far behind.

“The fight is intensifying between the two political parties,” said pollster Jean-Marc Léger AFP, Friday September 17, 2021.

“As none of the party leaders seem to have impressed voters, it is likely that it will be a vote of elimination rather than a vote of conviction,” he added.

When Trudeau withdrew his government in early August to force a general election, his popularity in opinion polls soared. Canadians strongly support Trudeau’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hundreds of billions of dollars are being distributed by the Trudeau government to support workers and businesses during this crisis. Other than that, the rollout of a covid-19 vaccine in the country is going well, despite the initial missteps.

It seems like the right time for Trudeau to try to win back a majority in a third term.

Trudeau remains the first choice of Canadians for the post of Prime Minister, but scandals and ethical lapses have tarnished his image as a golden boy. His own administration is also showing signs of “wear and tear” after Trudeau’s six-year term.
