Abbotsford’s Jasmit Singh Phulka repeated himself as champion in his 79 kg class at the Canadian World Team Trials on May 28 in Laval, Que.
His success qualifies him for a spot on Team Canada at the World Championships taking place September 16-24 in Belgrade, Serbia.
Phulka opened with a 7-2 decision win over Callum McNeice, edged out Patrick Leder after Leder suffered an injury, and then defeated Sam Barmish 7-1 to redeem his ticket.
He shared on Instagram that he has a busy summer ahead of him ahead of the World Cup.
“Before the World Cup I will travel around the world and play as many matches as possible at international level,” he explained. “This includes stops in Italy, Turkey, Spain, Hungary, Poland and Romania. Between tournaments, I will commute between my home in Abbotsford and my training center in Minnesota. Stay tuned as I try to earn even more hardware and continue to represent the Red and White with pride.”
Phulka has enjoyed a successful international career, including silver at the Pan American Championships earlier this year, and hopes to represent Canada at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
He previously won bronze at the 2019 Pan-Ams and also picked up bronzes at the 2022, 2017 and 2013 Commonwealth Games. Phulka is a product of Abbotsford-based Miri Piri Wrestling Club and also represents Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club.
