Badminton News: In September 2021, a month after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Loh Kean Yew of Singapore, then ranked 40th in the world, joined Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Viktor Axelsen as well as other players including World No. 24 from India Lakshya Sen, Brian Yang from Canada (World No. 43), Toby Penty from England (World No. 51), Felix Burestedt from Sweden (World No. 57) and two Danish 19-year-old training partners Axel Parkhoi and Marcus Viscovich to train and train together in Dubai.
Fast forward to December 19, 2021, Loh is now ranked 15th in the world and became the first Singaporean player and the first unranked player to win the men’s singles title at the BW World Championships. He beat world number 10 Kidambi Srikanth of India 21-15 and 22-20 in the BWF World Championships Final on December 19, 2021.
Loh has repeatedly admitted that his training with Axelsen in Dubai (after the Tokyo Olympics) boosted his self-confidence and motivated him to excel internationally.
On Thursday, Axelsen started his preparations for the 2022 season by posting the message below on his social media pages:
“The work continues. Glad to be back here at @nas_sc to train with these guys and for @mathiasthyrri here as she spends time in Dubai for New Years. Also to our best friend: @lohkeanyew we are ready for you .
This time, Axelsen also invited the 45th world men’s doubles player Mathias Thyrri to join him in Dubai.
Meanwhile, Loh Kean Yew responded to Axelsen’s Instagram post with the comments below:
