OTTAWA, December 31. / TASS /. Another record for the number of new cases of coronavirus infection per day was set in Canada on Thursday. According to the Ministry of Health, 39,818 cases have been recorded in the country in the past 24 hours. The previous maximum was recorded on Wednesday – 32,000 cases of COVID-19.
The reason for this significant increase in the number of people infected was the rapid spread of the omicron strain of the coronavirus in Canada. The total number of people infected in the country now exceeds 233.2 thousand Canadian regions reported 27 deaths associated with COVID-19 on Tuesday. Only one northern region – Nunavut – did not report on new cases.
In connection with the spread of the omicron strain, local authorities have significantly tightened quarantine restrictions. As a rule, they relate to a reduction of 50% of the permitted occupancy rate in restaurants, entertainment and sports facilities. Many civil servants and employees of private companies have been transferred to a remote mode of work. Quebec will impose a curfew on Friday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Last week, the Canadian government announced that it was resuming financial assistance programs for citizens who are temporarily unemployed due to these restrictions and who are not receiving sufficient income from their small businesses.
