KUASAKATACOM, New York- A bill was signed by US President Joe Biden on Thursday (12/23/2021) to become law.

The law, cited by Voa Indonesia on Friday (12/24/2021), says the White House bans imports of goods produced by forced Uyghur labor.

Note that after a year of negotiations, the US Congress finally approved the Uyghur law on the prevention of forced labor last week.

Law bans all imports from China’s Xinjiang region to America, unless companies can prove “clear and compelling evidence” that their supply chains are not employing labor ethnic Muslim-Uyghur enslaved in Chinese camps.

China describes the camps as “re-education” facilities to fight terrorism.

The new impetus to hold China accountable for human rights violations comes ahead of the Beijing Winter Olympics in February 2022.

Earlier this year, the United States called China’s actions against the Uyghur Muslim minority genocide and last week announced a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

An independent tribunal earlier this month ruled top Chinese leaders “fully responsible” for acts of genocide against the Uyghurs.

The bill has come under heavy criticism from the Chinese government. Even China describes America as a hypocrite not to deal with the forced labor that is happening on its own territory.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian last week said at a press conference, “China strongly opposes US congressional interference in China’s internal affairs under pretext for problems linked to Xinjiang. By fabricating lies and creating unrest on such issues, some US politicians are trying to put pressure on China and restrain China’s progress through political manipulation and economic intimidation in the name of human rights. “

Meanwhile, the bill itself has received support from human rights groups. The group praised the law and said it marked an important starting point for countries around the world to address China’s treatment of Uyghurs. “It’s a signal to the rest of the world that America is really going to take action on this,” Peter Irwin, senior communications and advocacy program manager at the Uyghur Human Rights Project, told VOA.

Peter Irwin added that the bill could be emulated by other countries. “It could also be a tendency for other governments to take similar action and say that we will pass our own forced labor laws, for example when America stops allowing forced labor, then the Chinese leadership will hijack their exports to Europe or Canada. So this new law is a framework for other governments to pass and pass this kind of bill, which will help America. It is akin to a diplomatic boycott. America is first, and other countries will follow, “he concluded.
