The Japanese measure was taken to protest the human rights conditions in China.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TOKYO – Japan decided not to send a ministerial delegation to the event Winter Olympics Beijing 2022. The measure was taken to protest against the human rights condition (HAM) in the country of the bamboo curtain.

“We do not intend to send a government delegation,” Japanese chief cabinet secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said at a regular press conference on Friday (12/24).

However, Matsuno did not say the move was a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics. “We don’t use certain terms to describe how we are present,” he said.

“Japan believes that it is important for China to guarantee the universal values of freedom, respect for human rights and the rule of law, which are universal values within the international community,” said Matsuno.

He said these points were taken into consideration by Japan when it decided not to send a government delegation to the Beijing Winter Olympics. However, Japan will continue to send officials with direct links to the competition, including the chairman of the organizing committee for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Seiko Hashimoto.

Previously, the United States (United States), Australia, Canada and Britain previously announced their measures to carry out a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics. Like Japan, they cited the human rights condition in China as the reason for the decision. However, these countries still allow their athletes to participate in the Beijing Winter Olympics.

China criticized the measures taken by the four countries. Beijing considers that the Olympics should not be used for the political stage. “Sport has nothing to do with politics. The Winter Olympics (in Beijing) are not a stage for political positions, ”Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on December 9.

According to him, the use of the Olympic platform by the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada for the purposes of political manipulation is unpopular. “They will certainly accept the consequences of their mistakes,” Wang said.
