– This gang had won three points, it’s incredible how they support us, Sivert Heltne Nilsen told Eurosport.
– It’s bitter. We have chances to score in the second half and it’s a silly goal that we let in.
Brann is fighting a desperate relegation battle and a life in the 1st division next season.
Against Vålerenga, three points were therefore crucial to occupy the important qualifying place.
After Sunday’s loss, however, it starts to look very dark for Brann, at least if a rerun is to be avoided. Sandefjord with 29 points is now eight points ahead of Stabæk in 14th place, while Brann is in direct relegation place with 20 points.
Stabæk has one point left in qualifying and one point for Mjøndalen. With five games to go, it will be a tough game to survive in the Elite Series for the last three teams.
– It’s gonna be a real fight. But that will not be decided until December 12. That’s what we’re set for, says Heltne Nilsen.
Balls on stuffing
The first half in Oslo was a relatively weak chance, and the biggest opportunities were created by the home team.
After just over 10 minutes, the home team should have led 1-0.
The ball was directed into its own goal by a Brann game after a corner kick and TV footage later showed the ball was over the line before goalkeeper Lennart Grill had time to react. The home crowd shouted at goal, but the referee called off the game.
– It is clear that we must achieve these goals. The linesman has no one either, says VIF coach Dag-Eilev Fagermo.
Vålerenga, however, received a bandage on the wound just before the break.
Vidar Örn Kjartansson thundered the ball into the goal behind an unlucky Grill after a defensive defeat from the guests. Pallesen Knudsen missed a clearance and the Icelandic striker was quick to seize the opportunity.
– It’s so good
Brann was more involved in the game in the second half. The away team insisted on an equalizer and seized several good chances.
Robert Taylor had a great opportunity to equalize after four minutes of overtime when he came on alone with Kjetil Haug, but Henrik Bjørdal did a huge job defensively and just blocked a five to six yard shot.
But the three points remained in Oslo.
– It’s so good. We were so tired at the end, I don’t know if I have words to describe it, Jonatan Tollås Nation told Eurosport.
– After 1-0, I am disappointed that we cannot end the match. We play like it’s 0-0. As long as we have the chance in 4th place, we will fight with pecks and claws, he comments.
Horneland: – Heavy
The loss means Brann played against Vålerenga for ten consecutive years without winning. The last time there was a victory in the capital against VIF was in 2011, when they won 2-0 after Kim Ojo scored two goals, according to NTB.
– It’s hard not to have anything with you. I think we deserve more. I’m very happy with the performance, it’s a good away game from us, commented Brann’s coach Eirik Horneland.
– We prepared for it to be hard, he adds.
