The streaming platform Spotify has just published its annual ranking which includes the main trends in the world of music according to the tastes of users.
The most listened to artist in the world is, for the second year in a row, Puerto Rican reggaeton singer Bad Bunny. Her music has over 9.1 billion views despite not releasing a new album this year.
She is followed by American singer Taylor Swift, who released two albums this year: Without fear (Taylor version) Yes Red (Taylor version), and third-place BTS, the world-renowned k-pop group who had a milestone year with their single “Butter”.
Finally, in fourth and fifth place are two popular Canadian singers: Drake, who released Boy in love certified in September, and Justin Bieber, whose March album this year, Justice, collaborated with artists from different parts of the world.
Among the world’s most played songs on Spotify is Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License”, which took # 1 with 1,100 million views.
In second place is “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” by Lil Nas X, which is part of the artist’s debut studio album titled Montero, and the third is The Kid LAROI’s collaboration with Justin Bieber, “STAY”.
In fourth place we find Olivia Rodrigo, but this time with the song “Good 4 U”, which also won the title of Song of the Summer from Spotify 2021, and in fifth place appears “Levitating”, by Dua Lipa in collaboration with DaBaby.
And concerning the most listened to 2021 albums on Spotify, Olivia Rodrigo is once again crowned thanks to her first production Sour. Subsequently, we have Nostalgia for the future by Dua Lipa, Justice by Justin Beiber, = by Ed Sheeran and Planet her of the cat Doja.
Spotify also highlighted some 2021 trends in its release. For example, nostalgia played a big part in audiences this year, with longtime fans listening to their favorite songs of yesteryear and new generations discovering these classics.
The songs released over 20 years ago that had the most plays in 2021 are: “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac, “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, “Yellow” by Coldplay, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana and “Every Breath You Take” From the police.
Likewise, among the albums with more than 20 years more listened to appears Rumors by Fleetwood Mac, It does not matter Nirvana, Hybrid theory Linkin Park, Appetite for destruction by Guns N ‘Roses and the eponymous Beatles album. Another trend that Spotify mentioned is the boom in gardening, with over 2.9 million playlists related to plant care. Some songs added to these were “Ivy” by Frank Ocean and “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles. In addition, the list called Music for Plants grew by 1,400% during the pandemic.
Finally, this year was marked by the worldwide deployment of covid vaccines, and this was represented on Spotify. The company revealed that the playlists related to this process reached over 42 million plays in 2021. Additionally, some of the songs added to those playlists are “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar and “The Cure” by Lady Gaga.
