Toronto, Canada, Dec. 13 (EFE) .- Canadian medical director Theresa Tam warned on Monday that community transmission of the omicron variant of the coronavirus that causes covid-19 is already underway and its high-capacity transmission may cause explosion in the number of cases in the country.

Tam said the omicron variant already accounts for 21% of the cases detected in the province of Ontario, the most populous in Canada. In the past two weeks, the number of covid-19 cases in Ontario has doubled and 1,328 were reported as of Monday.

The doctor said she expected the same to happen across the country over the next few days and that while community transmission is “perhaps in the early stages,” the situation “could rapidly deteriorate in the next few days “.

Last Friday, the Public Health Agency of Canada revealed that health officials fear a new wave of infections in the coming weeks, exacerbated by the emergence of the omicron variant, which would quadruple the number of daily cases. from 3,300 to 12,000 currently. But if the omicron variant becomes dominant, Canada could have 26,000 cases a day by mid-January.

Also on Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told a press conference that he was “very concerned” by the forecast released by the agency.

As of Friday, Canada recorded 4,600 new cases of covid-19, 80% of whom were unvaccinated. The latest figures show that 76% of all Canadians have received the full immunization program. EFE
