by Rex Daniel

Nova Scotians who suffered uninsurable damage from heavy rains and windstorm last month can now apply for disaster financial assistance, the province said on Monday.

John Lohr, the minister responsible for the Office of Emergency Management, said in a statement that he hopes the disaster financial assistance program for the November 23 weather system will help those facing the damage caused by the storm to receive the support they need.

“This storm has created a lot of fear and stress for many people. We want them to have peace of mind and to be able to move forward, ”he said.

Lohr said the funding is expected to total more than $ 10 million and cover items such as damaged appliances and household items.

He says the Canadian Red Cross will distribute additional emergency funds on behalf of the province to households in need of immediate assistance.

The storm severely affected parts of Cape Breton, which recorded between 100mm and 150mm of rain.

Some areas, including the Ingonish River, saw between 200mm and 300mm.

Parts of eastern mainland Nova Scotia were also severely affected by the storm.

Health Minister Michelle Thompson said households eligible for immediate assistance included 41 homes in Indian Gardens trailer park in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, and 11 households in Pictou County.
